H8 Hanahan SC 29410 ajaltman@crimson.ua.edu 8438106583 COMM Music Therapy Practice Act 71.226.102.61 Hello, I'm a music therapy student about to begin an internship at Trident Medical Center in Charleston. Tomorrow the state Senate will be voting on SB589, and I'd like to give you some information on the bill. Under current Medicaid Law, South Carolina families that qualify for medicaid can receive music therapy services. However, Medicaid will only cover healthcare practitioners with a state license and there is no state licensing procedure for music therapists in South Carolina. Music therapists who have spent years studying music as a beneficial tool to address patient needs aren't the ones providing the services. Right now any healthcare practitioner who uses music in the course of their treatment can fraudulently claim tax payer dollars for services they're not qualified to provide. The money for music therapy is there, it's just not providing services at the quality South Carolina families deserve. At best any music therapy services currently provided by Medicaid are ineffective and at worst a blatant and malicious claim to South Carolina tax dollars they haven't earned. Other music therapists in South Carolina and I believe that SB589 will pass the Senate and the House floors. When it does, I'd like the governor I voted for and admire to sign it.
