I am writing to ask you to end our state's failed and costly experiment with marijuana prohibition and replace it with a controlled, regulated system.

Public support for ending marijuana prohibition has never been clearer. An October 2013 Gallup poll found that a record 58% of Americans think marijuana should be legal!

Marijuana prohibition ensures that its production and sale are completely unregulated, and it generates violence. Unlike licensed businesses that sell liquor or tobacco, marijuana sellers operate virtually anywhere and have no incentive not to sell to minors. Drug dealers don't card. Right now, only criminals, often gangs or drug cartels, sell marijuana. Violence inevitably results when there are no legal means to settle disputes. We saw this under Prohibition, and we see this with the alarming amount of deaths linked to Mexican drug cartels. Colorado and Washington State have already taken marijuana off the criminal market. It's time to follow their example.

Please, look at the facts. Consider allowing adults to consume marijuana while taxing and strictly regulating its production and sale. Will you support tax and regulate legislation?
