(Columbia) Dec. 28, 2003 - Authorities have charged
three people, all under the age of 21, with aiding two
escaped convicts, one of whom was found hiding in a
mobile home.
Melissa Miller, 17, Joe Blackman, 17, and Sabrina
Bailey, 20, are all charged with helping two men who
escaped from prison last week.
Blackman and Bailey were in court Sunday morning.
Both were released on bond.
Blackman and Bailey are accused of harboring a
fugitive. SLED and Lexington County deputites found
Griffin hiding in their mobile home in Lexington
County.
Miller's bond hearing was Saturday. She faces
multiple charges, including assault and battery with
intent to kill, and aiding an escaped convict. Officers
say she could face even more charges as the
investigation continues. The judge set bond for Miller
at $200,000.
Shawn Wiles and John Griffin Jr have escaped from the
Ridgeland Correctional Institution together twice.
Both men are now in a Richland County jail after their
most recent escape on December 19th.
SLED and Lexington County sheriff's department
captured John Griffin Jr around 6:00am Saturday. They
found him hiding out in rural Lexington County. Griffin
was originally serving time for burglary.
On Friday, Griffin's apparent partner in
crime, Shawn Wiles, was captured after a standoff
in downtown Saluda lasted more than three hours. He was
serving a four year sentence for possession of a stolen
vehicle.
Melissa Miller is a teen who says she fell in love
with Wiles. The two met as kids and began dating six
months ago, while Wiles was in jail. Miller says she
hated being separated from the love of her life, "I just
wanted to see him for a while, just to hold him for a
little while that's all."
Miller says Wiles came to find her on Christmas Eve.
Now locked behind bars, Miller says it was a mistake to
go for a ride with him, "I know I shouldn't have left
with him, I know, but I just had to see him."
The incident began after a high-speed chase, at times
said to be up to speeds of 100mph, involving the Highway
Patrol. The chase began when a trooper clocked a vehicle
traveling at a high rate of speed.
The officer attempted to pull over the car. The
driver pulled over and as the officer got out of his
cruiser, the driver then made a U-turn and drove north.
Miller says she and Wiles were headed to her house
Friday afternoon when a trooper tried to pull them over,
"He was speeding. I kept telling him to slow down. Next
thing I know he started speeding faster, and I said
Shawn why are you doing this."
Troopers say they called off the chase as Wiles
approached downtown Saluda.
Eventually Wiles slammed the car into a squad car and
a vacant building, "He didn't mean to hit that cop car.
He tried to go around it. He was going too fast and
couldn't stop."
Saluda Sheriff Jason Booth says a deputy blocked an
intersection with his patrol car. Booth says a deputy
drove his cruiser in front of another car. The deputy
reportedly suffered minor injuries.
Police say the two barricaded themselves inside the
vacant building for a stand off that lasted more than
three hours.
Miller says Wiles urged her to turn herself in, "I
ran out of the car because I was scared. I didn't know
what to do. He told me before I got out of the car he
doesn't want me to go through this for me to just turn
myself in."
Police negotiated for several hours, but Miller
didn't turn herself in until after nearly an hour into
the stand off. She was taken to a local hospital with
minor injuries.
Police attempted to negotiate with Wiles to no avail.
Booth says SLED sent in a 10 officer team, "The entry
team went in and found the suspect on the roof of the
building. He'd broken tiles and gained entry to the
roof." No shots were fired and Wiles reportedly did not
resist arrest.
Miller says, "I didn't mean to hurt anyone with what
I did. I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I just
want to go home. I want things to go back to normal the
way they use to be."
Miller says she didn't know about her boyfriend's
plan to break out of jail.
