COLUMBIA, S.C. - A state representative has
moved back into a former home after lines were redrawn to include
the property in his House district.
State Rep. Joe Mahaffey says his daughter has been living at $1.5
million, 14,000-square-foot home near Greer but he hasn't completely
moved in.
Mahaffey, who represents District 36, had to move from the home
in 2002 after court-ordered redistricting put the home in District
35. He moved into a more modest home in Lyman, saying at the time
that he had been planning to downsize and would turn the old home
into a private clubhouse.
The redrawn lines put Mahaffey's home back in District 36; the
new line puts homes on one side of the street in District 36 and
those on the other in District 35.
Fellow Republican representatives Phil Sinclair and Scott Talley,
who represent Districts 35 and 34, respectively, agreed to the
changes. The three legislators would not say whether the precinct
trades were made to allow Mahaffey to move back into his old
home.
"It was done to consolidate precincts, and I was one of the
beneficiaries," Mahaffey said.
