Sue,
Mr. Smith will need to contact the County Assessor’s Office to dispute this bill or request additional time to pay. I can only review the law with him but cannot do anything with the assessment. Do you still want someone from the Department of Revenue to contact him?
Thanks
Jean,
E-mail for review and action. Thank you.

I had a home put on the land. I have already paid my land and house taxes for this year. Then 5 more bills came in the mail. Apparently since they had their big piece of land at an agricultural tax rate, which is 4 percent, and even though I pay a residency tax rate of 4 percent. The tax office goes back 5 years and requires me to pay the difference in what they were paying at the agricultural tax rate, and what they would have been paying if it had been at a 6 percent real property tax rate. So I have to pay the 2 percent difference for five years before I even owned the land. It is called Roll back taxes. It is a South Carolina state law that discourages people from purchasing land and having homes built in South Carolina. Because no one wants to purchase land and build a home when they would have to pay 5 years in someone elses back taxes. The best part is that the tax office sent me this right at Christmas time, and only gives me 30 days to come up with almost $800 to pay it. Paying 5 years in taxes for a property you didn't even own is theft. Now I understand why other members of my family don't want to move here.
Please help me fix this, I don't have the money to pay taxes twice this year.
Thank you, Jacob W. Smith </MSG>
