DMV offices closed today for training

Today is not the day to get your driver's license renewed -- or do anything else at the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Every DMV office in the state will be closed today as agency employees attend a mandatory customer service seminar at the Koger Center in Columbia.

Employees will be in training from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

DMV offices will reopen Thursday.

Educator Tapped To Lead Oconee Schools

Midlands educator Valerie Truesdale is the Oconee County school board's choice to be that district's next superintendent.

Currently chief academic officer for Irmo-Chapin schools, Truesdale is expected to sign a three-year contract calling for a base salary of $115,000, Oconee school board chairman Harry Mays said Tuesday.

Oconee's five-member board met over the weekend to deliberate over three finalists for the job, including an in-house candidate. Mays, among four who favored Truesdale's selection, said the majority concluded "she would be the one we felt most comfortable with and would be in the best interest of our students."

Truesdale could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

'No body' trial starts this morning

Opening statements were scheduled this morning in the Richland County trial of Jeffrey Weston, charged with murdering his 78-year-old mother who disappeared in 1998.

Frances Franchey vanished in August 1998 and has not been found. Weston, 43, is the first person to be tried in Richland County for a homicide in which the victim's body wasn't found, prosecutors say.

Weston has pleaded innocent to the murder charge. The jury was selected Tuesday; his trial before Circuit Court Judge G. Thomas Cooper is expected to run through this week.

WildeWood link proposal delayed

Richland County Council delayed a vote Tuesday on a proposed development near WildeWood to allow time for county planners and property owners to review an alternative plan.

Greenville-based Pierce Homes of Carolina had planned to build a 126-home development at Old Still and Leaning Tree roads with a link between WildeWood and Two Notch Road via WildeWood Park Drive.

But some WildeWood residents feared that their neighborhood could become a shortcut to avoid Two Notch Road traffic.

Now, the developers want to present an alternative plan that does not include the link.

A public hearing and first vote on the alternative plan is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 24 at Richland County Administration Building, 2020 Hampton St.

Investigators on Tuesday charged Scott M. Alexander, 28, of Easley, with contest of speed and two counts of vehicular homicide. They charged Neil D. Emery, 25, of Beaufort, with contest of speed, failure to stop and render aid, and driving under the influence.

Killed in the wreck were passengers Charles E. Perry, 28, of Union, and Hayden "Joe" Wallace IV, 24, of Easley.

Car seat inspections available today

The Richland County Sheriff's Department will offer free inspections of children's car seats today at the Target Store, 10204 Two Notch Road.

The inspections from 9 to 11 a.m. are being done with the Buckle Up South Carolina campaign.

Inspections generally take about 20 minutes.
