Moore cruises to easy win

AIKEN - In the end, it wasn't even close.

Democratic state Sen. Tommy Moore crushed Republican challenger Bernie Hamby on Tuesday, grabbing a resounding 68 percent of the vote with 38 of 54 precincts reporting.

The victory came as little surprise to most observers because Mr. Moore has held the District 25 seat with a firm grip since 1981.

At times in the campaign, it seemed Mr. Moore was out to make a statement with his victory. He spent more than $40,000, despite the overwhelming advantage that came with his incumbency.

He purchased billboard space throughout his district, which includes parts of Aiken, Saluda, Edgefield and McCormick counties.

The South Carolina Republican Party undoubtedly had something to do with the Clearwater senator's high-profile campaign. Mr. Moore, who some experts say could be a strong Democratic candidate for governor, didn't face an opponent until the GOP recruited Mr. Hamby.

Mr. Moore's original opponent, Susan Swanson, dropped out of the race, and Mr. Hamby didn't file to run until weeks after the official deadline had passed.
