Subject: Week of January 22, 2007

Good Morning,

The new inmate Associate of Arts program, sponsored by Columbia International University, is up and running at KCI. The first class/cohort of 15 inmates appears to be an outstanding group. Thanks and congratulations to all of those who worked so hard to make this vision a reality. This program is designed and intended to positively impact the culture of our institutions, especially in the long term.

Our Training Academy has published some interesting stats concerning the Advanced Supervisory Course. I would encourage each prison to look closely at the numbers for lieutenants and captains. A few institutions need to focus on this issue. Next January, this course will be a requirement to be eligible for promotion to uniformed ranks of lieutenant and above. I have asked Dan Murphy to forward those charts by email to all wardens and division directors.

Even thought the legislature is back, I will still be getting out and visiting institutions each week. I look forward to seeing many of you.

Have a great week.
