Airlines May Face Possible Fuel Shortages
Gas Prices Surge Thanks To Katrina
Retail Gas Prices Set to Hit New Highs
South Carolina - Governor Mark Sanford (website - news) has asked all state agencies to cut non-essential travel to help conserve fuel.

Supplies are dwindling in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which damaged oil platforms and refineries in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sanford says it's important for everyone to remain calm and patient, and to conserve gas.

The Executive Director of the South Carolina Petroleum Council says the state faces a bigger threat of fuel shortages because of it's number one industry, tourism.

A station in Laurens County reportedly was selling gasoline for $4.79 a gallon.

The fuel shortages and higher costs were causing problems particularly around Myrtle Beach as Labor Day weekend approaches.

The federal government is taking steps to alleviate the problem.

President Bush (website - news - bio) has agreed to tap into the Strategic Oil Reserve and the EPA has eased it's restrictions on gasoline refinement.

Meaning refineries can make gas cheaper and faster, but that same gas will put more pollutants in the air.

A rumor is going around that all convenience stores are shutting off their pumps at 12 PM today.  Is there any truth to this?

We are hearing rumors that the gas pumps are going to be shut off at 12PM today across SC.  I have not seen anything or heard anything to back this up.  However, the Charleston AFB is under the impression that this is statewide.  Can someone please confirm or straighten out this rumor.
Thank you,
Kimberly
