COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A bill approved today in
the House could bring three battle flags captured in 1780 by
the British back home to South Carolina.
The measure directs the state Budget and
Control Board to give the State Museum money, and directs the
museum to seek private donations or grants, to buy the
flags.
It's estimated the flags will be sold at
auction at Sotheby's in New York on Flag Day, June 14th, for
between two and three million dollars.
The flags were captured by Lieutenant Colonel
Banastre Tarleton during the Battle of the Waxhaws in
Lancaster County on May 29th, 1780. British troops killed 113
American soldiers and wounded 150.
