Governor Mark Sanford is traveling around the state today to promote his plan to lower state income tax rates to five percent from seven percent.
Sanford says income tax relief is key to creating jobs and spurring economic growth in the state.
The tax reduction would be coupled with a tax increase for cigarettes.
Under Sanford's plan, state taxes on cigarettes would be increased to 53 cents a pack, up from seven cents a pack. The expected 150 million dollars in annual revenue would be
dedicated to Medicaid programs.
