Sanford decision could mean revenue boost for DPS
The Department of Public Safety could get an
income boost by charging universities and other groups that call on Highway Patrol troopers to direct traffic during special events.
Governor Mark Sanford gave the Public Safety Department authority to charge for traffic control services troopers provide at events
such as college football games and parades. The agency now has troopers work such events at no charge.
An agency spokesperson says there are still plenty of details to work out, but they could charge around $24 an hour per trooper.
The agency expects to have a detailed proposal within the next seven to ten days.
