I have concerns for the safety of others as well as the safety of my family. I know the struggles involved in day to day politics can interfere or bottleneck progress when it comes to improvements to infrastructure. But please hear my voice and the voice of our children. We moved to South Carolina due to a transfer of our employment. We had many options throughout the U.S. but Charleston felt like a dream come true to us. We moved last November. We live in the Nelliefeild Plantation off Clements Ferry Road in Berkeley County, but still in the city of Charleston. Each morning my two young children are strapped into car seats as they set off to begin a day of learning, play, and new experiences. But on any given day we do not know what Clements Ferry road will offer us. Some days with low traffic lead us to attempt a left hand turn out of our plantation onto a 55mph road where it feels like finishing a NASCAR pit stop as we race to merge into mild traffic. With the new school I often worry about School buses making this same attempt. This is the case with many residents along the Clements Ferry corridor. o I am told the speed limit is being looked into but in my opinion it is a no brainer, it needs to be lowered. Especially in front of the school entrance. o Children on a bus (Without seatbelts) should never travel on a road at that speed. Nor should anyone have to merge with traffic at that speed. Please lower the speed limit of Clements Ferry immediately, and put our children in seatbelts. I hear the complaint that seatbelts on buses could cost up to $700 to $1000 per bus. What does a child's life cost? The second issue with Clements Ferry is the entrance to 526 and Clements Ferry also gets bottlenecked often resulting in the entire 4 mile stretch of CFR crawling. I work at Gildan on Clements Ferry and my son attends Daniel island Academy which every day at 3:30 to 4pm I drive to pick him up, to often I sit in traffic on Clements ferry for 45 minutes to an hour to travel the 3.5 miles to pick up my son. During this time I have witnessed other motorist travel through the center median to attempt to get to 526 faster. In New York I was a volunteer firefighter and EMT, so I have firsthand experience what this violation of traffic laws will result in. There will be a tragic event if this does not stop immediately. o For this issue with traffic jamming up I have little solutions to provide. A new bridge or a third lane to the existing Don Holt bridge would be my only options. o The center median issue is being combated by the new presence of our Berkeley County Sheriff's officers. I had the pleasure in speaking with our Sherriff Mr. Duane Lewis, He is doing everything he but has a staff that is very small in comparison to the county with at times only 18 officers to patrol a county the size of Rhode Island. Many motorist are trying to do their part by sending photos of violators plate number to the patrolman and women assigned to our small part of the county. ? For this we need help in the way of more officers. Last thing I want to speak about it the Clements Ferry Road widening project. This project is already several months behind schedule. We (Clements Ferry road residents) want peace of mind knowing that our project means as much to you all as it does to the residents. We have the feeling that our project was a cornerstone of some elected officials to make it into office. Then the slowdown in progress goes by the wayside and is not on anyone's agenda to follow up on. Without progress the project is moving backwards. Or at the least it is perceived as such. Most times perception is reality. o Fall 2017 the Phillips Simmons High school opens. Which will put our young adults on CFR, Buses, driving or possibly a pedestrian. The road currently has no travel path (sidewalk) for pedestrians. I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
