Rep. Norman,

I can’t thank you enough for agreeing to get us a US Flag that was flown above the state house as we celebrate Chief Rick Evelsizer’s retirement next month.  When we last spoke about it you also mentioned getting you some information regarding Chief Evelsizer’s career for a proclamation from Gov. Haley to present to him.  Below is hopefully information that will be helpful in that endeavor.

Rick Evelsizer joined the Tega Cay Police Department in 1992 as a patrol officer.  In 1998, he was promoted to Chief of Police.  At that time, the Department consisted of two patrol officers, a lieutenant and the Chief.  Rick spent the next 16 years focusing on building the police department into what it is today.  His efforts took the department from being not much more than elevated security of a sleepy little city, that was only 10 years old when he got here, into a professional department.  He has been able to increase the department from the four sworn officers we had when he was promoted to 21 sworn officers today.  He has spent his career focused on raising the standards of the department as evidence by his starting the accreditation process a few years ago, not on personal accolades.  He began his tenure as Chief by organizing the command structure and eventually establishing the Administration, Patrol and Police Services divisions within the Department to better streamline operations and provide better public safety for our residents.  He enhanced our boat patrol on the lake and started a K-9 unit for the City.  His vision of professionalism helped increase training and technology within the department.  During his time as Chief, we saw the Department join the Multi-Jurisdictional task force and obtain grant funding that provided for additional training and safety equipment for his officers.  Chief Evelsizer assumed his role during a time where patrol officers were not allowed to leave the City to respond to calls just outside our borders and their uniforms were not much more than a patch and a badge on a shirt.  He began a rank structure for his officers and watched the department grow into the professional, full service department that we have today.  Chief Evelsizer raised his family in Tega Cay and called the city his home for nearly two decades.  His passion for his job and the people of our community have been a mainstay for over twenty years and words cannot express our gratitude.

Hopefully this information will assist in the Governor’s proclamation and thank you again for obtaining the flag for us.  Do you know when we might be able to get the flag from you?  We wanted to put it in a case for him and get a plaque for it showing his years’ of service.  The celebration luncheon will be on November 7th at the Glennon Center.  Invitations will be sent out in the mail this week.  Thank you for all that you do for the City of Tega Cay and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
