You have indicated that you are not interested in discussing policy at this time, but feel that it is the most appropriate time for healing. I believe that taking this flag down would, in fact, be a very good start to that healing process. There is no better time to acknowledge the growing disparity in our country than naming injustices and condemning those associations than immediately after such a blatant and horrific example of hate. The best way we can begin to have healing discussions that bring people together is to be the first to stand against the root of these kinds of terrorist acts, clearly and swiftly. Just as we do not expect nor accept a German heritage group flying the Nazi flag; just as Texas rejects the confederate flag as state sponsored speech on license plates, it is time for the great state of South Carolina to please recognize that the HERITAGE, NOT HATE argument is not a reality for all of your constituents. The flag has its place -- in the halls of museums, perhaps -- but that place is not now, not over the State Capitol. Please do the right thing; please take it down.
