Supporters of a plan to give parents tax credits for
sending children to private schools have refiled the bill with
a smaller tax break.
The new proposal offers about
2,200 dollars tax credit for private school tuition. The old
bill would have given a tax break worth more than 3,400
dollars.
The bill's sponsor, state Representative Doug
Smith, says he made the change because some lawmakers worried
the tax credits would take too much money away from public
schools.
Governor Mark Sanford (website - news) supports
the new bill. He mentioned the idea repeatedly in his State of
the State address.
Opponents of the proposal say the
idea is unproven and would only help well-off families.
