Dear Governor:

Whenever the Civil War is brought up my predominant emotion is melancholy/sadness.  I believe this is so because good men on both sides honestly believed their causes to be just.  Though I am descended from northern Yankees, I believe the just cause of the South was resistance to forced union - the right of secession.  This right was insufficiently valued one hundred and fifty years ago and is insufficiently valued today.  

Today the people of South Ossetia and Crimea have a right to self-determination.  If we believe their referendums were flawed, rather than moving NATO forces into Eastern Europe, we should demand UN supervised plebiscites.  This cause is unfortunately as relevant today as it was in the Civil War.  

Removing the Battle Flag will make the statement that 300,000 Confederates died for nothing.  We will be saying their sacrifice was in vain, and the sadness will continue.  

I offer as an alternative a proposal to fly the Battle Flag with the Black Liberation Flag.  You would then have two flags flying representing the just causes from both sides of the war.
