Governor Seeks Federal Disaster Declaration
(Columbia-AP) -- Governor Mark Sanford has asked President Bush to declare a major disaster for South Carolina after last month's severe ice storm.

The storm froze much of the state January 26th and 27th with ice and sleet that damaged power lines and trees.

More than 260,000 customers were left without electricity, some for up to a week.

Expenses from the storm are expected to total more than $28 million.

Sanford wrote in a letter that supplementary federal assistance is necessary.
