GREENVILLE - Turnout was light for the Republican primary to fill the District 24 seat in Columbia. That was expected.
None of the four candidates reached the 50 percent of the vote threshold needed to claim the party nomination. That was also expected.
Bruce Bannister received close to 40 percent of Tuesday's vote with 1,594 ballots cast for him. He will face William Herlong is a runoff on August 30th. Herlong got about 25 percent of the vote with 1,038.
Warren Mowry (782 votes) and Tom Ervin (597 votes) finished out of the runoff.
The winner of the Republican runoff in two weeks will face Democrat Michelle Shain for the seat on October 4th. That special election is being held to replace David Wilkins. He left that seat open after being named U.S. Ambassador to Canada.
Bannister is the youngest candidate. He put education and economic development on his platform. "I think people are real worried about South Carolina's economy and the bond rating dropping. They're also worried about schools and the negative national press that we've gotten," he says.
Herlong has some different priorities. "Number one, top of everything is economic development, drawing more industry to the state is absolutely critical," he says. The school board member also says the education system needs work.
