SOUTH CAROLINA PERFORMANCE AUDIT COMMITTEE REVIEWS INDEPENDENT AUDIT OF BERKELEY COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Columbia, 8/17/99. Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler, Chairman of the South Carolina Performance Audit Committee, publicly released the audit of the Berkeley County School District today. This is the first school district in South Carolina to be audited by the committee.

Lieutenant Governor Peeler said, "I am encouraged by the cooperative spirit that went into this audit process and I think the taxpayers of South Carolina will be well served by the findings in the report. This is another positive step towards better accountability for our state’s educational system in South Carolina and my hope is that the audit will be used as a tool to provide a more effective and efficient use of state tax dollars in all our school districts."

The audit conducted by KPMG-Peat Marwick lists potential savings of $1.2 million in the school district. Specifically, the audit finds $850,000 in potential savings in custodial operations and another $450,000 in potential savings in Special Education costs. The audit recommends that any savings be reinvested in the district to reduce classroom size and to update textbooks for students. The audit will be presented to the Berkeley County School District at their meeting tonight at 7:30pm.
