Lexington County Peach Festival
GILBERT---For over four decades, the Lexington County Peach Festival has been held during the 4th of July weekend in Gilbert, SC, to recognize the Lexington County Peach, the peach industry, and the birthday of our nation!
As any other typical Lexington Peach Festival day, festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with the judging of all kinds of peach dishes in the Peachy Fruit Contest. Other events during the daylong event include a peach auction, recognition of the oldest and youngest in attendance, the ever popular parade which winds through the main streets of Gilbert beginning at 9:30 AM. Also, numerous groups, bands, dance schools, and vocalists will entertain on the three outdoor stages, and hundreds of arts and crafts exhibitors will be on hand to sell crafts---many with "peachy" themes. There will also be plenty of peachy treats such as peach ice cream, peach tea, peach almond delights, peach sundaes, peach pie, and fresh peaches.
Proceeds from the festival support civic and community clubs. Youth who work with the Lexington Peach Festival for three years are provided $300 college scholarships. By the turn of the century, almost 80 scholarships had been awarded.
Sponsored by the Gilbert Community Club, the 2002 Lexington Peach Festival will be held on Thursday, July 4th, 2002, in the beautiful five-acre Gilbert Community Park, funded, in part, with proceeds from past festivals. The Peach Festival demonstrates how a small community, committed and dedicated, can make great accomplishments, and why Gilbert has become synonymous with peaches.
