(Columbia-AP) June 5, 2005 - It was a good year for
law enforcement in the state Legislature.
A budget surplus has led to pay increases, new
officers and other resources after years of losing
officers because of low pay or no money for new hires.
The law enforcement highlights of the budget include
a four percent across-the-board pay increase for all
state employees and another six percent for officers.
Funds were allocated for 403 new law enforcement
officers at the State Law Enforcement Division and the
Departments of Public Safety, Corrections, Juvenile
Justice and Natural Resources. Law enforcement and
correctional agencies also have an additional $12
million to buy new vehicles and other equipment.
SLED Chief Robert Stewart said the money will be a
tremendous help.
