Bill would allow school districts to raise sales tax

Associated Press

State Rep. Lanny Littlejohn, R-Pacolet, has filed a bill that would allow local school boards to increase the sales tax in their districts by one penny on the dollar to help pay for construction.

The local-option tax would give schools a way to fund new buildings without raising property taxes, Littlejohn said. The money could be used only to build schools or pay off debt.

Voters in each school district would have to approve the tax increase, which would be in addition to the 5 percent state sales tax.

Sales tax will be a hot issue debated when the General Assembly reconvenes on Tuesday.

A proposal from Reps. Rick Quinn, R-Columbia, and Vincent Sheheen, D-Camden, also would increase the state sales tax to 7 percent. A plan by House Ways and Means Chairman Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, would increase it to 6 percent.
