I also serve as a Governor's appointee to the SC State 9-1-1 Advisory Committee. I am requesting Governor Haley to proclaim April 12-18, 2015 as "Public Safety Telecommunicator Week". Each year, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators (aka 9-1-1 Dispatchers) throughout the United States. In 1994 Congress approved the permanent designation of "National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week." Many counties also issue proclamations for that week. I believe that a proclamation by Governor Haley recognizing these "behind-the-scenes" public safety professionals would truly honor the work they do on a daily basis. South Carolina has 50 9-1-1 public safety answering points (PSAPs)that answer an average of 4.4 million wireline and wireless 9-1-1 calls annually. There are numerous additional emergency communication centers (such as the SC Highway Patrol telecommunicators) throughout the state that do not answer 9-1-1 calls directly but do provide emergency call taking and dispatching for their communities. Also, making the proclamation announcement from a 9-1-1 PSAP would give further visibility to the men and women who provide help to those in need. Charleston County would be most happy to host the Governor but completely understand that she may want to make the proclamation from a PSAP closer to Columbia. Thank you for your consideration and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
