ABOUT THIS TRANSCRIPT

• Gov. Mark Sanford and several dozen House Republicans held a 45-minute air-clearing session Wednesday.

• Reporters from several news organizations tried to attend the meeting but were removed from its site, a State House auditorium.

• One legislator agreed to tape the session for The State; the newspaper agreed not to name the legislator. The taping was legal under S.C. law.

• Some of the House members in the meeting knew it was being taped. House Speaker David Wilkins, R-Greenville, says he did not know. Had he known, Wilkins said he might have “pared down” some of his remarks. “It wouldn’t have changed the direction of the meeting, but it wouldn’t have been quite as open, quite as frank.”

• Sanford says he too did not know the meeting was being taped. But, said spokesman Will Folks, “The governor stands by everything he said in that meeting. He would have said a heck of a lot more in his own defense if he knew that ... it was going to be a public forum.”

• The transcript published today excerpts some of the discussion. It is not a complete account.

• In most cases, Wilkins called on the other legislators before they spoke, thus the identity of the speaker is known. In other cases, the legislators’ voices were clearly identifiable. Instances in which it was unclear who was speaking have been omitted.
