GAFFNEY, S.C. - A Cherokee County council
member has been indicted on drug charges after undercover police
officers say he tried to sell painkillers at a business he owns.
Billy Wallace, 60, of Gaffney, was indicted Thursday on one count
of distribution of the controlled substance Oxycontin and one count
of possession with intent to distribute.
Wallace was arrested by State Law Enforcement Division agents on
May 8 at Wallace Sav-Mor. He tried to distribute the prescription
drugs to an undercover Cherokee County deputy in April, police
said.
Copies of the indictment have been forwarded to Gov. Mark
Sanford, who could suspend Wallace from office. The governor will
review the case, spokesman Will Folks said.
Wallace was elected to the council in November 2000 and currently
serves as chairman of the judicial services committee.
