Each middle school may submit one merit-based winner to be judged on the state level. This is in addition to the three "Sorting Hat" submissions allowed
for each school. The merit-based winner may be from any of the three specified grade levels including 6th, 7th, and 8th.
The winning merit-based student response submitted by each school should represent the best composition of the school, based on the criteria furnished by the
Governor’s Focus on Reading (see enclosed 15-point writing rubric) and judged by a panel at the school level. Student responses may include visual representations; however, a visual
representation alone will not be accepted. It is the responsibility of the teacher or teachers to convey to the student an understanding of the criteria. The Governor’s Focus on Reading
recommends a minimum of three judges from the school level select the final merit-based entry.
The final merit-based entry (that which is submitted to the state level competition) must be typewritten or computer-generated, on white 8-1/2" by 11"
paper, with the text double-spaced. Each written response should include the student’s name, grade, school name and address, and sponsoring teacher’s name on the back of each page. Conformity
to this standard will prevent the paper from being lost, maintain judging objectivity and ensure fairness in evaluation. Entries received that are not in this form will not be considered.
The typist (whether the student himself, teacher, parent or office assistant) is permitted to correct spelling, grammar and punctuation of the student’s essay,
after judging has taken place at the school level and in preparation for submission. We will consider these mechanics in judging but will be most concerned with content, style and creative
expression.
A photocopy of the original text must accompany the final version, in addition to the form completed by the sponsoring teacher, certifying the written response is
the student’s work, and his or hers alone. (See attached.) If the original work is typed, clearly mark it "draft" to avoid confusion with the final. The draft copy also should have the
student’s name, grade, school name and address, and sponsoring teacher’s name on the back of each page.
Determination that the student has plagiarized someone else’s writing will result in disqualification.
