Facing shortage, Red Cross appeals for blood donations

The Associated Press

The American Red Cross in South Carolina is extending hours and beefing up incentives as it appeals for blood donations to offset a dangerously low blood supply.

The Red Cross has begun to ration blood to hospitals because the organization is down to less than a one-day supply of blood. One hospital in the state ran out of O positive blood for several hours and had to receive blood imported from Charlotte to avoid canceling surgeries, the organization said.

Donor centers in Columbia, Florence, Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Sumter and Myrtle Beach will open at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They will close at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Also, through July 15, donors will receive a vintage ball cap and be entered for a chance to win two plane tickets.
