Lexington Floriculture Team Is Among Top Ten in the Nation
COLUMBIA, SC---The Lexington Technology Center FFA Floriculture Team placed among the top ten teams in the nation in competition at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky recently, according to John W. Parris, State Director of Public Affairs with the South Carolina FFA Association.
Team members Leah Lowery, Nic Stratton and Kevin Sox were coached by Tommy Harmon, Agricultural Education Teacher and FFA Advisor at the Technology Center. The team had competed at the school and state level to earn the privilege of representing South Carolina at the National FFA Convention. All three team members were recognized as Gold Emblem Award winners at a Recognition Banquet held during the convention.
According to Mr. Harmon, FFA Floriculture Team members test their knowledge and skills in the production and retailing of flowers, plants and foliage as a part of the competition.
"Participants must complete a general knowledge exam on the floriculture industry, identify plant materials, demonstrate problem solving/decision making skills, employment and customer service skills, technical floral skills and the ability to work as a team", Mr. Harmon added.
The Floriculture Career Development Event is one of many educational activities at the National FFA Convention in which FFA members apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to real life situations. The event, held at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, used plant materials donated and loaned by merchants.
