Sanford Talks 2005 Legislative
Session |
(Columbia) - Governor Mark Sanford spoke
with News19 about the legislative session that is coming to an
end.
Governor Sanford says this year's legislative session
has had its pluses and minuses. And says the bigger question
remains.
"How do we become more competitive as a state?"
Governor Sanford told New19's J.R. Berry that he thinks South
Carolina is leaning that way.
With all but ten of his budget
vetoes overridden, Sanford says some people just don't think the way
he does.
He said that working taxpayers don't want to grow
the government at 9.1% when their paychecks are only growing at a
fraction of that. He wants to put the money in what he calls the
"cookie jar."
Concerning the race for a new Speaker of the
House, Governor Sanford said, "We'll soon know." He says he's
staying out of that race, but says they will work well with whomever
the body elects.
And about gas prices this travel season,
Sanford says no one likes it. But he encourages South Carolinians to
enjoy the recreational hot spots right in this state -- what he
calls "uncovered jewels."
