Governor Haley,

I know it wasn't easy for you to go against the wishes of many of the people who elected you, but I have a new respect for you because you decided to do what was right and compassionate.

No, matter what you may ever do in the future, this was a shining day for you.  

I am a white, 71 year old woman, an extremely liberal Independent; so I haven't agreed with most of the things you have done so far; but, but - if I had the opportunity I would give you a big old hug.  May you and your family be safe and well-protected.  For every person who might wish you ill because of your stand on that confederate flag, there are a 1,000, black and white, people who would encircle you to protect you from harm.

I know from some years as an activist that people will go to great lengths to intimidate people they disagree with, especially when one is publicly speaking out for others rights.  The only thing we can do is stand strong and build our moral fiber and be examples for those more timid.  To be a good citizen of the world means that each of us has to stand up for what is right.  Otherwise, we risk losing our rights, our self-respect, our integrity.
