The PAX network has picked up the Charleston-based TV series "Palmetto Pointe" for 17 original episodes, and a total of 39 weekly showings, including re-runs.

The presence of the series here is expected to pump millions of dollars into the local economy, officials said Friday. The teen drama will be seen at 8 p.m. Sundays on PAX starting Aug. 21, executive producer Tim Woodward said.

"Our show is a really feel-good show," said Woodward, 22, who also plays the lead role in the show. His character in "Palmetto Pointe" is a minor-league baseball player who comes home to face some personal demons, including the death of his parents, Woodward said.

Filming for "Palmetto Pointe" begins July 15. The show will be filmed at International Talent Studios in Summerville, and at locations in the Charleston area such as beaches, stadiums and colleges.

PAX TV is known as an inspirational network offering family entertainment. It reaches 89 percent of U.S. television households, or about 96 million homes through broadcast, cable and satellite distribution systems.

John Kearns, 26, an executive producer and creator of "Palmetto Pointe," said the show will offer opportunities for locals interested in the TV business. "I'm a firm believer that we are going to make it to the top. I think (the show) will help people to go after their dreams and live life to the fullest," he said.

"Palmetto Pointe" is the first series filmed in the South Carolina. The pilot was filmed in North Carolina, but new state tax incentives helped lure it here.
