THE CLEAN UP
BEGINS...
Although Hurricane Charley
didn't pack the Category 4 winds he did when making landfall in
Florida, the damage brought to the South Carolina coast is
widespread.
Winds from Charley tore roofs from buildings,
toppled signs, and pushed trees over onto houses. Getting damage
estimates from the cities and rural areas throughout Horry and
Georgetown will take several days.
Many of you will be
assessing the damage over the next few days, so there are a few tips
you might want to keep in mind when you're going about this
process.
Homeowner's, mobile homeowner's, and renter's
insurance usually covers wind damage, some rain damage, theft,
vandalism and fire. Check to see if your insurance company offers
reasonable reimbursment for emergency repairs to prevent futher
damage, additional living expenses, debris removal and actual cash
value or replacement value of the damaged property. It will depend
on your policy. Make a list of the items/property damaged and take
pictures for documentation. Don't forget to keep all your receipts
and beware of consumer fraud. If you use a contractor, you need to
ask for a state or county license. Experts recommend that you don't
sign a contract until you see the company's license and
references.
If your damage is extensive, you may need a
building permit to make certain types of repairs to your property.
In Myrtle Beach, construction services will be open Sunday from 10
till 4. That office is in the city services building at 10th Avenue
North and Oak Street. |
