A trails workshop featuring a wide array of experts from the public and private sectors will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, March 6-7, at the Piedmont Forestry Center in northern Oconee County.
“The State of South Carolina’s Trails: Plans, Progress and Partnerships” (pdf file) is sponsored by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, S.C. Forestry Commission, S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the U.S. Forest Service.
The first day of the workshop, March 6, will be devoted to “Plans and Progress,” and will feature a keynote address on “Changing Populations and Recreation Trends” by Dr. Ken Cordell, project leader and pioneering scientist at the U.S. Forest Service Research station in Athens, Ga. Cordell and Tony Bebber of the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism will then talk on “Trends in Trail-based Recreation: South Carolina and the Southern Region.” Later panels and talks on March 6 will cover trails on public lands in South Carolina, building a municipal trail network and planning for recreation.
The second day of the workshop, March 7, will be devoted to partnerships. Panel discussions will feature terrestrial and water trails in South Carolina. Field trips to area trails will also be conducted during the two-day workshop.
