Weaver 7000 Devon Rd. Columbia SC 29209 cwo4weaver@aol.com 803-783-0352 803-309-1330 ETHI A common sense solution to the Confederate flag issue Governor Haley, There was not a topic listed above to fit this issue but ethics was the closest. I wrote the enclosed "letter" to the Editor of The State newspaper today and wanted to send a copy of it to you for your consideration. It stated: "Common sense is not common. However, there is a common sense solution to the Confederate flag issue that would probably be satisfactory to 80% of South Carolinians. Take down the Confederate battle flag and raise, instead, the true flag of the Confederacy, which bears no resemblance to the battle flag and has no racist baggage. The flag of the confederacy has 7, 9, 11 or 13 white stars in a field of blue in the upper left corner of the flag, with two red and one white stripe, taking up the remainder of the flag. It would keep the flag up for the heritage folks and take the reminder of the KKK, etc. down for the people offended by the battle flag. The only people who would object are the 10% on either end who will settle only for the battle flag and those who will settle only for all vestiges of the Civil War being erased. The Confederate monument, which is taller than the flagpole, is the proper place to fly the Flag of the Confederacy but common sense is not common, emotion will probably rule over reason, and this idea will not fly." I hope that I am wrong and that a true "Win-Win" decision will be made by the legislature, rather than a knee jerk emotional decision. The National Flag of the Confederacy appears nothing like the Confederate battle flag and should be a sensible compromise to all fair-minded people of our state. I really have little interest in the opinions of people who do not live here. It is hoped that you will actually get to see this email and would be happy to discuss it further or answer any questions that you may have. Respectfully submitted, Miles Weaver
