(SERCAP) has been celebrating National Drinking Water Week during the first full week of May each year since the late 1980s when it was established by Congress. This year SERCAP will begin celebrating the upcoming National Drinking Water Week and the need to protect our water supplies beginning with its annual Water is Life Luncheon on April 20 and throughout the months of April and May. The mission of SERCAP is to improve the quality of life for low-income individuals by promoting affordable water and wastewater facilities, community development, environmental health, and economic self-sufficiency. SERCAP serves seven Atlantic coastal states: SC, DE, MD, VA, NC, GA and FL. Suggested Proclamation Verbiage: Whereas, the health, safety and well-being of all South Carolinians are of utmost importance to the prosperity and livelihood of our State's families and communities; and Whereas, South Carolina's streams, lakes, rivers, watersheds and other clean water sources must be protected to maintain the good health of our citizens and our wildlife and fishery populations; and Whereas, protecting South Carolina's natural water supply and other natural resources is crucial to the preservation of our environment and to future generations of South Carolinians; and Whereas, elected officials at each level of government, as well as businesses and citizens throughout our State are responsible for ensuring that all South Carolinians have access to clean, healthy drinking water; and Whereas, it is the duty of all South Carolinians to preserve our supply of clean drinking water for future generations by not littering and obeying laws that are designed to protect South Carolina's water supplies for our use and for the safety of our State's diverse ecological systems; Now, therefore, I do hereby recognize May 1-7, 2016 as South Carolina Drinking Water Week and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
