Sanford Backs Off Threat of Lawsuit For Now
(Columbia-AP) -- Governor Mark Sanford has decided for now to back off threats to sue the Legislature over a massive economic development bill.

He says he made his decision after a secret meeting with Republican leaders this afternoon.

The governor says he's not giving up option to sue, but wants to fix things legislatively first.

Sanford had threatened to challenge the constitutionality of putting unrelated items in the bill.

Sanford was upset the economic development bill included provisions to make the University of South Carolina Sumter a four-year school and to create a four-year cooking program at Trident Technical College.

The General Assembly easily overrode his veto. House Republicans told Sanford the lawsuit would have no merit.
