State Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating an
assault complaint against a former Loris police officer.
Loris Police Chief Herbert Blake confirmed Friday that he asked
for a SLED investigation after a citizen said earlier this month
that he was assaulted by then-Officer Jimmy Jackson. Jackson
resigned his position Monday, Blake said.
The SLED investigation, however, is ongoing, according to agency
spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson.
"I contacted SLED because I wanted to make sure this was
investigated by an unbiased source," Blake said.
Blake said a citizen alleged that, on Nov. 2, Jackson poked him,
then assaulted him. Jackson was on duty but not responding to a call
when the incident occurred, Blake said.
Blake couldn't say whether charges are likely to result from the
investigation. "I thought that, without an investigation, it could
cause a problem either way it turned out. I don't know if anything
will come from it."
Jackson's resignation leaves the Loris Police Department with
eight full-time officers and seven volunteer reserve officers.
