Governor Sanford Kayaks Sparkleberry Swamp
(Columbia) - Governor Sanford and his family spent the day on a kayak tour of the Sparkleberry Swamp.

The outing is part of the Governor's 2005 Family Fitness Challenge, which encourages South Carolinians to become more active and make healthier decisions.

But the event also served as a platform for another issue. The governor voiced his disapproval of Congressman Jim Clyburn's plan to build a $110 million bridge that would cut across Sparkleberry Swamp.

"In this case we're also trying to highlight the uniqueness of this particular swamp and why a lot of people in South Carolina have some reservations about a big bridge cutting across this very unique part of South Carolina," Gov. Sanford said Sunday.

But Congressman Clyburn sees this building proposal as a bridge to the future.

"Three studies have indicated that the best thing that we can do to increase the economic base is to build a bridge to connect Hwy. 33 and Hwy. 120 because it will create a commercial corrider from Sumter to Orangeburg," Congressman Clyburn said Sunday. "People aren't going to live in rural South Carolina unless we build an infrastructure that adds value to their lives and to their property."
