“He hasn’t dressed out.”

— Sen. John Land, D-Clarendon, speaking as Senate Democrats held a news conference and gave Gov. Mark Sanford a failing grade for the 2006 session.

THE DAILY BUZZ

EASY BEING GREEN

The only question surrounding Gov. Mark Sanford’s veto of a bill making it a misdemeanor to picket close to funerals was how quickly the General Assembly would override it.

Sanford said the law was too broad. It makes protests within 1,000 feet of a service a crime. The ban applies to 30 minutes before and after a service.

House members took issue with that, and even recruited an unlikely vote.

York County members lobbied Rep. Ralph Norman to overturn the veto. Norman is running for U.S. Congress, and has been a staunch supporter of Sanford.

But when the votes went up, Norman voted green to override, joining the other 104 votes in the House.

It earned Norman a round of applause.
