Charleston and Savannah are in a tight battle
for bragging rights in the shipping industry. South Carolina
Ports moved one-point-54 million containers in the first
nine months of the year. That's an eight-point-two percent
increase over last year.
The Georgia Ports Authority
moved one-point-38 million containers during the same
period. That's an increase of seven-point-seven percent.
Charleston was the fourth largest container port last year.
Savannah ranked fifth.
South Carolina officials worry
growth in Savannah could take jobs and business from
Charleston. South Carolina ports spokesman Byron Miller says
Savannah has chipped away at Charleston's advantage. Georgia
officials say they don't see the ports in direct competition.
