COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Oconee County Supervisor Ann Hughes, who was indicted Tuesday on embezzlement charges, has been suspended from her job.
Gov. Mark Sanford suspended Hughes in accordance with state law, spokesman Will Folks said.
Folks said that any time an elected official is indicted, the state constitution requires the governor to suspend that person.
Hughes was arrested by State Law Enforcement Division agents two weeks ago.
She faces three counts of embezzlement of public funds and one charge of misconduct in office.
Sanford appointed County Council member Harry Hamilton as interim supervisor.
Hughes trial date has not been set.
