Greetings Governor, I am writing as a former SC resident. I am completely saddened by the despicable enacted by the young man who was so convinced of his delusions that he terrorized innocent God-fearing residents of Charleston - and in a place of worship no less! The shock and horror is difficult to comprehend. However, removing the confederate flag does not help heal the wounds but rather fuel the flames of racism. We need to embrace the history of the south. We need to learn from past regressions. The flag does not represent racism. It represents a historical movement whereby the southern states wanted to succeed from the union for independence from rules the south did not agree with such as imposed tariffs. No doubt, slavery was also a significant reason but not the only one. My point in writing is that we should not delete and remove every little thing that is so offensive to our black brothers and sisters. It is history. No one fails to fly the Irish flag in NY anytime of the year but yet they were treated lower than second rate citizens at times in the early 1900's. We have done so much to promote our fellow Americans (all backgrounds) but I do not see how this will help heal this nation. I ask you rather than fuel the flames by further dividing the nation, explain that the flag will remain as a reminder of where we have come as a nation and where we will go together peacefully and in unity. Respectfully, M. Mangan
