Walgreens breaks ground on facility
Walgreen Co.
broke ground Thursday on its new distribution center at the Alliance Industrial
Park in Anderson County.About 450 employees are expected to be hired initially
for the center, and employment will grow as the facility serves more
stores.Walgreens is investing more than $175 million in the project. The center
will serve about 200 to 250 stores in eight states throughout the South and
Mid-Atlantic areas. The facility, with 700,000 square feet and future expansion
capabilities, is expected to open in 2007."This is the kind of success story we
want to duplicate over and over again throughout South Carolina," said Gov. Mark
Sanford. "Local economic development folks played a key role in making this
project happen, and we want to give them the tools they need to bring home
additional jobs and capital investment."That starts with lowering the income
tax, which would vastly improve our business climate and make our state even
more attractive to companies looking to build or expand."
