COLUMBIA, S.C. - A fuming Gov. Mark Sanford
watched the House race through his stack of 106 budget vetoes
Wednesday, and accused Republican leaders of trying embarrass
him.
"It is completely disrespectful of the time and effort the
governor put into this process and it is not something he is going
to lay down and forget about," Sanford's spokesman Will Folks
said.
In less than an hour, the House managed to override nearly half
of the vetoes with little or no debate, and continued its rapid
pace.
House Speaker David Wilkins, R-Greenville, and House Ways and
Means Chairman Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, defended their version
of the budget against the governor's vetoes, which included changes
in how the state might spend $90 million expected from tougher tax
law enforcement.
"It's all about being conservative. It's all about being fiscally
responsible," Wilkins said as he urged the House to vote to override
the vetoes on the state's $5.5 billion budget.
"This clearly is an effort by leaders in the House, like Chairman
Bobby Harrell, to embarrass the governor," Folks said. |
