DMV to start offering licenses good for 10 years

From staff reports

Instead of the usual five-year renewal period, the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles will be offering 10-year driver's licenses at DMV branch offices beginning Monday.

The measure is part of the DMV Reform Act, signed by Gov. Mark Sanford in June.

The new licenses will be available only for people under 65 years old holding one of three license types:

Class G moped.

Class D passenger vehicle.

Class M motorcycle.

A combination Classes D and M for both passenger vehicles and motorcycles.

Drivers with a 10-year license will still have to submit a vision screening during the fifth year.

To submit a screening, drivers may mail in a certificate from their optometrist or ophthalmologist or visit a DMV office.

Licenses issued through the mail or online will continue to be issued for a five-year renewal program.

The renewal periods for other credentials issued by the DMV will not change.
