S.C. JUDICIARY

Judges must be independent from legislature

The S.C. Bar's Commission on Judicial Independence applauds your editorial ("Youthful acting out") as well as the letter of clarification by Rep.Thad Viers, R-Myrtle Beach, that appeared in your Nov. 12 edition.

Our nation and state are founded on the principle of three separate but equal branches of government performing distinctly different functions.

Your editorial correctly recognizes that in order to dispense justice, our judges in South Carolina must be independent from outside influences of any kind, including our legislative and executive branches of government.

Circuit Judge John Breeden was appropriately performing his duties in entertaining the petition of the Center of Hope Clinic.

Making a decision on this petition was his job.

Let us hope in South Carolina that judges will always be insulated from outside influences and will constantly strive to achieve justice for all.
