Hamm, and Richland County School Board Members, The incident that occurred at Spring Valley High School is very troubling to me. My experience as a Behavioral Health Registered Nurse with 29 years of healthcare and life experience make me feel compelled to respond. The NonViolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) initial training and yearly refresher is mandatory for all behavioral health personnel. It is my feeling that this training would benefit all school and security/safety personnel. Hospital security personnel are oftentimes instructors for NVCI classes. The statistics tell of the benefits in your own State: http://www.crisisprevention.com/Resources/Case-Studies/Nonviolent-Crisis-Intervention-Training-Case-Studi/Education/South-Carolina-Dept-of-Education "The most common reaction to people who go through training is: 'Everybody in the world needs the de-escalation piece.' They find the skills they learn useful in dealing not only with parents and family situations, but in a wide variety of daily encounters." -Mike Paget South Carolina Department of Education NVCI training through Crisis Prevention Institute is about, "Equipping you with positive strategies for handling difficult situations." Were any of the NVCI techniques employed prior to the Officer placing hands-on the student? One of the first steps taught in NVCI is, "Remove the audience." If the other students had been removed and the student was with personnel trained in NVCI techniques, my bet is that this situation would have been defused without the need to place hands on the student.
