Investigation continues into fatal collision

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office hopes to complete by Friday its probe of the fatal collision Saturday night involving a state trooper's vehicle and a bicyclist, a sheriff's spokesman said Tuesday.

The results will be turned over to 13th Circuit Solicitor's Office for evaluation by prosecutors, said Lt. Shea Smith, the spokesman.

Authorities said the trooper, identified Tuesday by the state Highway Patrol as Lance Cpl. Jerry Fowler, was turning his vehicle around on State 183 to pursue a speeder when he struck a bicyclist.

Fowler's car was the first of two to strike Jerry Levon Rosemond, 52, according to the Greenville County Coroner's Office, Smith said. Rosemond died at the scene at 11:59 p.m.

The trooper was driving north on State 183 when he spotted a speeding car, turned around and began heading south, Smith said. Rosemond was turning right from Montgomery Drive onto State 183 when Fowler's patrol car struck him from behind, Smith said. Fowler was then hit by a second vehicle also traveling south on the highway, he said.

Three days later, still on the road, were the letters "POI," for point-of-impact, marking where the crash happened.

Investigators are looking into whether Rosemond had a light on his bicycle and how fast the trooper was driving. Also part of the investigation is how Fowler reacted to the collision, authorities said.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sid Gaulden said Monday that Fowler stopped immediately after the collision and called Emergency Medical Services.

Accident scene: The letters POI, for point of impact, mark the spot at the corner of Montgomery Avenue and State 183 where a bicyclist was struck and killed by a state trooper's vehicle and a second vehicle on Saturday.
