I locked my classroom door. I told my students to be calm and try to concentrate on Edith Wharton. We worked in our locked room until President McConnell sent a text saying Roof had been captured. I released my students and wended my way home through a ghostly downtown Charleston. Must we wait for another such horrifying experience before we ban people on the no-fly list from buying guns and ammunition in our great state? Might you find the courage to do as Governor Malloy has done by executive order and ban such purchases in SC? Edith Wharton teaches us that women of great courage often remain unappreciated in their time. Yet these women inspire future men and women to refuse to deny their individual humanity in the face of social pressure, to think critically and carefully about reality, and behave with personal integrity, bravery, and clarity, the winds of justice blowing steadily at their backs. thank you. sharon
